Bipolar PROMS:
Older types of MEI coin mechanisms store coin data on removeable Bipolar PROMs. Once programmed these PROMs cannot be erased. They were available in 1k or 2k sizes. The 1k size has a lower (1) and an upper (2) segment and each segment can be programmed with one complete set of coin data for the mechanism. The coin mechanism usually has some form of selection device to allow the Technician to change which segment the coin mechanism uses. As an example a coin mechanism can be programmed in advance of a change of currency to accept old style coins in segment 1 and new ones in segment 2 with the Technician switching between the two when appropriate. (Due to the variety of models of mechanism, switching from one segment to another can be problematical)  The 2k PROM had four segments. Unfortunately both types of PROM are no longer manufactured and are becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to obtain. They are even more expensive in the longer term as they cannot be reprogrammed but must be replaced when, for instance, a coin mechanism needs to be tweaked to stop the acceptance of fraud coins.

Mektek E+1 memory devices:
Instead of the PROM use an E+1 reprogrammable memory device from Mektek. These devices fit in the same socket as the PROM but have two major advantages. Firstly they can be reprogrammed as many times as necessary and secondly they have a simple mechanical switch to move from one segment to another. Different models are available dependent on the mechanism type as below.

E+1A:For amusement mechanisms such as ME111, ME115, ME115TS, ME126, ME129,
ME181, ME112, MS130B1 (Not suitable for old MS111 mechanisms with a heat sink near PROM socket).  

E+1V - for vending mechanisms such as MS1000, ME1099
